I work on the Common App during lunch. I make a dent in the personal essay, trying to milk surviving a fire for all its worth. Make them think Iâve overcome my trauma. Iâve learned enough catchphrases in therapy to make it sound convincing. Maybe if my subpar GPA canât win them over, my life story will. At least part of it. Iâm leaving out the part where I hook up with a guy whose family is such a mess I canât tell where the lies end and the truth begins. I donât know if Trevor wrote that letter or not. I donât know if his death was something other than what it seems like: an overdose.
Iâm realizing that maybe Iâm not meant to figure it out.
I thought that if I could, if I could find out what really happened to Vic and Jess, that it could be some sort of karmic makeup for everything I put Clint through. I could finally right my wrong.
But Iâm not sure thatâs true anymore. Itâs incredible, really, that I even thought it was a possibility.
When the bell rings, I slip my laptop into my bag. I only have one more period to get through before the day is over. I push open the library doors when I see Andrea, twenty feet away. Headed in my direction.
Then, I realize, sheâs headed straight for me.
âLex said you might be here,â she says.
I take her in, all five feet three of her. Her round brown eyes are identical to her sisterâs, at least from the photos of Vic Iâve seen. âI want you to hear it from me first. We want you back on the team.â
Iâm not expecting this. At all.
I wonder how the news hit her and her family this past weekend. I canât even imagine. Iâve really never considered it from her perspective. Iâve been too selfishly consumed in my own shit. But if my sister had died, and my teammate was hooking up with the guy who I thought killed her?
Iâd be fucking livid.
âI owe you an apology,â I tell her. âI mean I owe you more than that, but I just want you to know that Iâm sorry.â
âJust so you know, Mara told me about her idea with the necklace,â Andrea says. âI told her to do it. If it ended up saving another girl from the Crestmonts, I thought it was worth it.â
âI understand,â I tell her.
Andrea clenches her jaw. âThe police are testing the blood on the bikini top. I mean, itâs going to be Vicâs. But seeing itâ¦â She shakes her head. âIt was like finding out she was dead all over again.â
I swallow hard.
Do I tell her about finding it? Would that make things worse? I donât even know how I would begin to explain everything.
âIâm sorry,â I mumble again.
Her hands fiddle with her backpack zipper. She opens it, revealing a package of something that looks like a glazed breakfast pastry.
âStickies are a Happy Valley staple.â She hands the box to me.
